The Aulani Resort on the island of Oahu, Hawaii has been a bucket list destination of mine for so long. Once our toddler began demonstrating awareness of the Disney magic, we decided it was time to make this dream come true! Cue Moana – “there’s a line where the sky meets the sea, it calls me….”

Getting There:
After landing at the Daniel K. Inouye Airport in Oahu, we took a shuttle bus to the Aulani Resort, which was about a 25-minute drive. While the cost is not included in your stay, transportation through the Hele Hele Shuttle Service can be arranged through the Aulani concierge prior to your arrival. Our primary goal during our stay was to enjoy the resort and surrounding areas; however, if you plan to drive around and explore the island, I recommend first renting a car at the airport.
Activities:
Beach
First and foremost, we just HAD to visit the ocean and dig our feet into the sand! The beach at Aulani is incredibly family friendly as it’s actually a lagoon (Ko Olina Lagoon), so there are no rough waves. Beach loungers are complimentary for resort guests, or if you plan to beach all day and would like a Casabella lounger with a covering, you may purchase one on a first-come, first-serve basis. The resort also offers complimentary boogie boards and lifejackets. If interested in snorkeling or stand-up paddleboarding, guests may rent that equipment at an additional cost.

Pools
Aulani has no shortage of pools, and with such a variety, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The infinity-edge grotto pool allows guests to live out their mermaid moments, while the Keiki splash zone and Menehune Bridge provide space for kids to run and play. The lazy river winds through the resort and is not to be missed, especially as you might spot Mickey or a member of his gang taking a walk! The largest resort pool is the Waikolohe pool, which contains a tunnel slide and a zero-entry area. We spent much of our time here – it’s a great spot to order a pool-side lunch. Be sure to check the app to see when pool parties might take place!

Attend a Luau
A vacation in Hawai’i isn’t complete without a luau, and Disney puts on a fabulous one. The evening begins with pre-show demonstrations and activities such as temporary tattooing, lei making, and ukelele lessons. Guests then enjoy buffet-style dining with authentic Hawaiian dishes and tropical island drinks. Luau performances then commence, with wonderful storytelling and dancing. Mickey and friends even make an appearance!

Aunty’s Beach House
For guests ages 4-12, Aunty’s Beach House provides a space to engage in Hawaiian art, culture, and music. After kids are pre-registered into the program, they may participate in complimentary activities or premium experiences, which require an additional fee. Registration for these activities opens 45 days in advance and can be made here.
Visit the Spa
The Laniwai Spa is a must-do for guests who desire a little pampering! The facilities are gorgeous and one could spend an entire day there. David and I received a couples massage and it was wonderful. Included with your spa service is access to the hydrotherapy garden where guests can enjoy a variety of cold and hot pools, as well as access to saunas, locker facilities, and a relaxation zone complete with drinks and snacks.
Go on an Excursion
Whether you’re into adventure – be it kayaking, zip-lining, or surfing – or looking for a more relaxed tour or hike, Aulani offers many excursions for those who wish to experience Hawaii off-property. While reservations are made through the Aulani resort, the excursion operators are independent contractors. David and I signed up for the Pearl Harbor tour and found it interesting and emotionally moving. Our tour guide was amazing and picked us up right in front of the Aulani lobby. A complete list of excursions offered through Aulani can be found here.

Character Meet & Greets
When staying at the Aulani resort, guests simply must visit Mickey and his friends! Whether it be snagging an autograph/photo at the greeting stations or dining with the gang at a character breakfast, these visits are sure to fill you with the Disney magic! Special Hawaiian characters like Moana and Stitch make the experience extra magical.

Take a Walk
The Aulani Resort beach is located on the Ko Olina lagoon, which has a fantastic walking path beside it. If you continue on this path heading south, you will pass three more lagoons and multiple other resorts. One of my favorite memories is grabbing a coffee to go and enjoying a nice morning walk along this path. A couple days we even saw monk seals sunbathing on the beaches!

Food:
In addition to special experiences like the luau and character breakfast, Aulani offers a multitude of dining choices:
Off the Hook
For a casual option, guests can grab a bite at this pool-adjacent restaurant. I ordered shrimp tacos and shrimp flatbread – both were delicious. If you wish to enjoy a meal at your pool lounger, you may place an order with an attendant and they will bring it to you!
Ulu Cafe
The Ulu Café is an on-site convenience store that serves both freshly-made hot entrees and premade grab and go meals and snacks. If you would like a pizza to take down to the beach, this is the place to go! Don’t miss out on the Dole Whips!

Mama’s Snack Shop
Another casual option, serving chicken fingers, coconut shrimp, corndog bites, and fish and chips.
Papalua Shaved Ice
Grab a signature Hawaiian treat – but good luck choosing your flavors – the options are extensive!
‘Ama’Ama
For an elevated dinner experience set in an open-air restaurant, try ‘Ama’Ama. The menu features a prix-fixe, 4-course dinner with locally sourced fish and produce. Reservations are recommended!

We had the most wonderful time during our week at Aulani. This resort manages to combine the magic of Disney with authentic Hawaiian experiences. We left feeling relaxed and more knowledgable about Hawaiian culture. Mahalo, Aulani!
